Mixed-Media Fun Faces Cards

Preparation for Drama-free Friday began with Sponsor supervision. Charlie had been sunning himself in the window when he decided that I needed his help. It's a good thing my project was small! 🙂

I love combining fabric and paper. To create these cards I fused cotton flesh-toned fabric to card stock with Steam-a Seam 2 paper-backed fusible web. It's very easy to do and combines the attributes of paper and fabric. The card stock stiffens the fabric while allowing me to use my Fun Faces Rubber Stamps, pens, and pencils on the fabric as I love to do.

After fusing the fabric and card stock together, I cut 3 3/4″ x 5″ pieces that will become the card fronts. I also love King Tut Decorative Thread, so Charlie “helped” me zig zag around the edges of each fused fabric rectangle with my favorite colors of King Tut Thread.

During the Drama-free Friday LIVE show, I began with one of the images from Fun Faces Rubber Stamps (Harriet) and stamped it with Archival Ink. The best colors of ink I've found to be Orange Blossom, Sienna, or Sepia.

I add details to the face image with Pigma Micron 01 pens before adding color and blending with Prismacolor Premier pencils. I've been doing this technique for a long time and never get tired of the magic!

My favorite pencil colors for faces include:

  • Terra Cotta 944 for shading
  • Cream 914 for highlights
  • Pink 929 for cheeks/lips
  • Crimson Red 924
  • Mulberry 995
  • Limepeel 1005
  • Olive Green 911
  • Violet Blue 933
  • Light Cerulean Blue 904
  • Parma Violet 1008
  • Violet 932

Once I'm happy with the face, I often brush Scribbles Glittering Crystal over the eye shadow for a little sparkle. Sometimes I even add a bit of crystal on her lower lip, too.

A quick spray of Krylon Workable Fixatif protects the artwork.

You can see in the photos that I added hair and hats to 2 of the faces and left one as though she is peering out of the fabric.

To attach the card fronts to Simply Solids Textured Cards, I use Double-sided tape before adding a few words because it doesn't feel like one of my cards without words. 😉

I'd love for you to join me next Friday for the next episode of Drama-free Friday. We begin at 2pm Eastern every Friday and I'd love the chance to chat with you!

Until next time ~
