I was never much of a history buff until a few years ago when I agreed to help a local historian write his weekly newspaper columns. Each week I was privileged to spend an afternoon organizing and typing his thoughts and wealth of information into an article. In spite of my prior lack of interest in history, I couldn’t help but be drawn into the events surrounding the area in which I live. I learned how my city came into being and about the determined people who built our community. Week by week those conversations changed me and my appreciation for history.
As a result of those wonderful afternoons, I now find myself able to recognize and appreciate historical events as they are happening. One such occurrence was talked and written about for months before it happened - the solar eclipse of 2017.
This eclipse in which the moon completely blocked the sun for 2 minutes and 41 seconds is the first total eclipse in our area since 1869! The excitement grew like wildfire as people anticipated what the total eclipse would be like. Protective glasses were in short supply and doctors admonished everyone on radio, television, in newspapers as well as social media sites about the importance of eye protection. It was a BIG deal here!
As the eclipse was just about to take place, the temperature dropped and animals seemed a little uneasy. The chorus of cicadas and crickets rose to their usual evening din at 1 in the afternoon! I must admit, it was quite weird and wonderful at the same time. All too quickly the moon continued on its path, everything returned to normal and the total eclipse of 2017 is now an historical event.
Outstanding experiences always find a way into my journals, but I wanted something special to commemorate the eclipse. That’s how the Moon Maiden was born. She is part doll, part ornament and all creativity and fun!
In this class, you’ll learn how to make your one-of-a-kind Moon Maiden. In the next class, you’ll have fun embellishing her. In case you didn't know, she's quite opinionated!
If you're ready, download your class notes and pattern and I’ll see you in class.
