If you’re anything like I used to be, you have no confidence that you can ever learn to draw. The old saying, “I can’t draw a straight line with a ruler” was my personal affirmation for years. I’m willing to bet it is the story you repeat to yourself every time you think about trying to draw.
Did you know that drawing is actually more about seeing than it is about how you move the pencil or pen? Apprehension usually keeps us from the ability to see. Someone may have asked you as a child, “What is that?” when you proudly shared your sweet little drawing. Such a simple question is often enough to cause your little inner artist doubt about her ability and to affirm from that moment forward that you can’t draw. If the viewer couldn’t understand what you so obviously drew, confidence often evaporates and leaves behind a false lasting impression of failure.
There are several ways to get over a long-standing fear of drawing. You can take an art class with a good teacher who will methodically remind you how to see. You naturally see the world around you, but you’ve forgotten how to observe and translate your observations through your pen and paper. Good teachers gently remind you that you can do it. They know how to help you find that forgotten part of yourself.
Another way to alleviate your drawing fear is to trust a teacher’s unorthodox approach to drawing. That’s what you’ll have to do in this class. 🙂 You may be initially challenged by this way of drawing, but if you put your trust in me, I know you’ll be drawing your very own adorable dogs and cats in no time and having lots of fun doing it.
