Inspiration shows up everywhere! I have a large collection of books and magazines and sometimes I grab a stack and enjoy an hour of eye candy. No matter how many times I've looked through them, it's like the first time! As my interests evolve, different things catch my attention.
In the Winter 2010 issue of SEW Somerset, an article entitled In The Doghouse written by Cindy Copp-Waterfield caught my eye. Because I'm an animal lover, as many in my family are, I immediately thought these little houses would be a great way to use up my fabric scraps. Wrong! I barely dented my bin of scraps! 🙂
Although I used the the magazine article as inspiration, I created my own version by printing my dog images as well as the text on Colorfast Fabric Sheets. Steam-a-Seam 2 is a pressure sensitive, heat-activated fusible web. I used a 9″x12″ sheet of Steam-a-Seam as the base upon which I created the fabric collage. It's a great product for this kind of project because the pressure sensitivity really helps control small fabrics before permanently fusing.
After creating my doghouse and roof, I fused them to Warm & Natural cotton batting. It's easy to attach a scrap of cotton behind the batting with Sulky KK2000 Temporary Adhesive Spray. Then it was time to stitch. Of course I used my favorite King Tut Variegated threads! You know I had to use those!! I added stitching to embellish the house, around the edges and to connect the house to the roof.
I stitched the dog and words to the house with King Tut thread and further embellished with buttons. The hanger is more little scraps stitched to a foundation strip. By punching a hole with a 1/4″ We R Memory Keepers Power Punch, I easily added the hanger to the roof.
Too much fun!
