What is your play time? Do you daydream? Color with crayons? Draw funny faces? Doodle with watercolors or pens? You might have been told that the act of playing as an adult was silly but I’m here to tell you that being silly is exactly what we need to spend more time being. You absolutely can’t play too much or have too much fun!
It’s easy to talk yourself out of playing and in to adulting. I’m not suggesting that you avoid all manner of responsibilities, but balance in life is so important and it’s soooo easy to lose. I truly believe that if we would faithfully enjoy play-time every day, responsibility-time would be more enjoyable. How can you do that? Make PLAY a priority! Schedule it. Put it in your planner. Just do it!
One of my favorite fun activities is exploring faces and expression. Sometimes I collect and organize images of faces. I house them in a binder with notes about what I like about each one. I find them in magazines, on brochures or in my practice sketches. Other times I work with fabric faces. I love creating and coloring funny little faces on large fabric-covered buttons that later become lapel pins and journal jewelry.
In this class, Introduction to Needle Sculpting, you’ll get to play with a cloth head and a few hand stitches to reveal a personality. That’s where the magic starts! Once the stitches are in place, some added pen and colored pencil details illuminate the character. All you need to do is to be a willing vehicle through which this little being blooms. Oh, and you must be willing to enjoy the process, too!
Needle sculpting is sometimes a scary phrase but it’s actually just a simple process of needle and thread holding the stuffing in place to create expression and character. If you’ve never tried needle sculpting before, take a deep breath and enjoy a step by step class. Anything is easy and doable when you know how!
