There’s nothing quite as satisfying as creating your own painted fabric and then making fun gifts and accessories for yourself and others. I have piles of fabrics that I’ve painted, printed and stamped. I love every single inch of it, too! If you enjoy creating your own fabric, I hope you feel the same way. Here’s a tip. If you don’t love it for some reason, put it away for a while and when you look at it again, you might have forgotten what you didn’t like about it! Or, you’ll have a fresh idea about changing it so that you do love it.
I have always loved to sew and I couldn’t wait to own my first sewing machine. Through the years I’ve purchased several different kinds of sewing machines, and just like my piles of fabric, I love each of them. One is an embroidery machine which takes my creativity in unexpected directions. One is a very, very old straight stitch machine that sews the best seam and makes the most beautiful buttonholes with its clunky, goofy attachment. Another machine trims the edges of fabric and stitches an overlocked edge. And of course I have my favorite Bernina 1230 that does most of my sewing jobs.
Even though I’m privileged to own several different types of sewing machines, there are times when I’m just not in the mood to stitch.
Because of my non-sewing frame of mind, I decided to see how many projects I could create with my hand painted, printed, stamped fabrics without ever touching a machine! You know what, I had a blast figuring out what to do and how to make them. One of the immediate challenges when working with fabric is choosing the correct adhesive material and method. After a few trials and errors, I found the answers. You’ll learn all about that in class.
Who wouldn’t enjoy receiving note cards made with hand created fabric? Or, a special bookmark slipped inside a new book? What about making a no-sew journal cover? I could go on and on, but I’ll save that for class! 🙂
Don’t get me wrong. I won’t let my sewing machine sit idle too long, but making no-sew projects with my own fabrics is truly fun, very creative and unlike anything I can buy.
