I believe creativity might be an integral part of my very DNA. My earliest memories always include making things. I remember sitting on the kitchen counter while my mother was baking bread and preparing meals. She probably never consciously realized the impact of those many, many hours I sat watching her create wonderful things with her hands.

My mother made many things other than food - doll clothes, quilts, paper dolls, cloth books, cookies, and gifts for others. And she involved me as often as I would pay attention. 🙂 She taught me so much about enjoying the process of doing a good job without having to be perfect. Not until much later did I realize the value of what she was actually modeling me. . .

My mother wasn’t my only creative teacher. Wherever we lived, I instinctively sought a relationship with grandmother figures. Sitting at the feet of these incredible women, they taught me how to needlepoint, embroider, and how to live a rich, wonderful life.

Stuffed animals and dolls were my constant companions as a preschooler. Each one had a unique name and story crafted in my very active imagination. Every character and adventure were expressions of my SELF. My Self-Portrait was slowly developing as I explored personalities and stories.

Adolescence tends to cloud everything about SELF as blending in and acceptance becomes more important than authenticity. In public, I blindly followed the group to fit in, but in private, I practiced the piano for hours every week so I could make beautiful music. I learned to knit so I could make each family member a special Christmas gift. I embraced sewing classes so that I could save money and create clothing that fit my evolving shape. Although I didn’t realize it, my SELF was growing stronger with each activity that delighted me.

By continuing to learn and make, I’ve discovered how much I love color - the brighter, the better! I’ve learned about personal symbols - things that make me smile and feel happy inside. Each discovery puts another piece of my SELF in place.

Since HowToGetCreative began, I’ve wanted to create a Self-Portrait class; not a literal likeness but rather a fun representation. That day has arrived! You’ll need to be a little bit brave as you discover and delight in what represents you. Are you ready?

This is the first of a 2-part class, How to Create a Self-Portrait, where you’ll learn how to make your very own Self-Portrait using fabric or paper.

Prepare for a fun journey! Download your class notes and I’ll meet you in class. I can’t wait to “see” who you are.
