I know you’ve heard me say this (or read it) MANY times; “I love books!” It’s just the truth - plain, simple truth. Books contain some of my earliest memories whether being read to by my mother or pretending to read to myself. As a preschooler, Little Golden Books filled the space between boredom and drifting off to sleep at nap time. The stories and images always swept me away in my imagination which was far more colorful and fun than any cartoon or movie. I might ride in an airship with the hero as he sailed to rescue his friends or creep through the forest behind Robin Hood as he is met with his band of merry men.
I must admit that when I entered school and discovered some books were incredibly boring (math, science, and history), I used to construct elaborate pictures in my mind to make those subjects tolerable. Mysterious equations, pointless experiments and events that happened lifetimes ago created fodder for my overactive imagination. 😉
As time passed I began writing my own books! I learned to illustrate them with my own images and colors. After publishing and printing several books including NORMAL Doesn’t Live Here Anymore: an inspiring story of hope for caregivers, Creating Faces: needle sculpting from the beginning, Mandala Melange and my newest book, Mandala Medley, I discovered that I wanted to know even more about making books.
I began experimenting with various bookbinding structures. Some of them are fast and easy to create and you’ll find them located in the Books category of HowToGetCreative.com. I love Coptic Stitch binding, too, although it requires more patience than I possess some days. 😉
I’m also fascinated with folded structures like Origami Flowers and Scandinavian Stars. One afternoon, some creative friends and I played around with a folded book structure that eventually led to this class - How to Create a Folded Boxes Book.
There’s nothing quite as much fun for me as combining several aspects of my creative interests - Books - Folded Structures - Book Binding. I bet you’ll enjoy this class, too, as you create one-of-a-kind books.
