I love color! I have to admit that my favorite colors are vibrant and fun to play with. I enjoy creating with color and always surround myself with hues that make me feel happy and alive.
My formal introduction to color began when my son was small. I spent a couple of hours of "me-time" each week learning to paint with oils. My teacher was wonderful and very patient and I'm incredibly grateful for the education I received from her. She often referred to the color wheel as we mixed pigments for a project. Although I enjoyed learning, the whole subject of color remained a mystery for a long time. Nevertheless, I continued painting and creating with color as I learned about the color wheel.
A few years ago my creativity and ideas felt used up and burned out from a lot of unexpected life stuff. By chance I found a company that produced fused-fabric laser cut images. I couldn’t take my eyes away from an image of a huge phoenix. The design was stunning, and the bright colorful batik fabric assisted the reemergence of my intuition and self-expression.
For several weeks I was completely absorbed with the creation of a large wall hanging as I fused and quilted my new friend onto black cotton fabric. Now I see my phoenix hanging in my studio and I’m reminded of my deep attachment to color in my creative life.
Also in my studio are a series of seven small quilts that hang where I see them as I work. Each one explores a hue of the rainbow - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. They always make me smile! It’s impossible for me to look at these pieces and feel creatively stuck. For me, color IS creativity!
Today, one of the most useful tools in my creative space is a color wheel! In fact, I have several color wheels and color tools along with multiple books on the subject of color. Understanding relationships between hues and how to use them can be overwhelming but when you start from the beginning, it’s really not so mysterious.
In this class you will create a color wheel with your own color samples. You’ll explore color combinations, the attributes of color and much more and you’ll see projects created with various color schemes, too.
Be sure to download your illustrated class notes and I’ll see you in class.
