How to Create a Mixed Media Squash Fold Card or Book

Although I don't consider myself a stellar card maker, I love making unique cards as a fun way to give a money gift. Somehow, it feels more like a gift than just handing someone a gift card or cash, don't you think?

Several years ago I found this idea called a Squash Card. I don't actually know whether the folding process is reason this card is called a Squash card, or the way you “squash” it back together to close it. 😉 Either way, it's a fun name and a truly interesting structure to create.

I strongly recommend that you make a practice card. (By the way, this same structure would make a fun 1-page book!) The first time I made these cards, I tried several ways to decorate them with pockets, little tags, journaling spots, etc. Some of them worked well and others didn't. I suggest always taking notes on your process to save time when creating future cards.

When I was ready to begin the card for this LIVE! stream, I began with a large piece of Canson Mix-media paper, diluted Tumble Dyes and some of my favorite stencils:

When I was happy with my stencils and sprays, I added some circles with Moonlight Gelly Roll Pens. Next, I added a few stamped circles and more details with Gelly Roll Pens. After folding the squares as shown in the video, I attached them together with Scor Tape.

Now for the fun part – deciding how to embellish the card. I pulled out lots of Deli Paper leftovers from monoprinting sessions with my Gelli Arts Gel Printing Plates. Deli Paper is really thin and works perfectly for folded cards like these. Glue Stick is a great way to attach thin papers to Canson Mix-media Paper.

From here, the sky is the limit! And remember that this card can be embellished on both sides. You could even add covers on the front and back which would make this structure even more book-like.

If you create a Squash-folded card, please feel free to tweet photos @BarbOwenDesigns. I really love sharing your art!
