Need some inspiration? Check Local Art Festivals
Every June, during the first weekend, we are treated to Art in the Park which is presented by our local Art League. The heat, although sometimes overbearing, doesn't stop the crowd of thousands each day as they walk around the beautiful park filled with art and inspiration.
More than 100 booths of artists display an incredible array of paintings, pottery, metal sculpture, jewelry, fiber arts, mixed-media and a whole lot more!
Wandering through the crowd are strolling magicians and juggling stilt-walkers who encourage everyone to check out the entertainment at the music stage. And there’s even a food court when you need a break from all the shopping and eye candy.
Art in the Park utilizes several hundred volunteers to make the experience delightful for everyone – whether age 2 or 102.
It Drew Me In!
One particular booth drew me inside – American Forging. One of the artists enthusiastically explained their process. First, the design is created and hand engraved in reverse into a block of steel with hammer and chisel. A piece of recycled aluminum is placed atop the engraved steel and forced into the engraving, creating the forward image in a process known as repoussé. After cutting the piece to the desired size, it’s edged and colored to enrich the details. Lastly, the metal is shined to perfection.
As I love books, a bookmark was the perfect choice – a special treat from the hubster! Don't you love the sunflowers on my new bookmark?

Kids and Art
Perhaps the best part of Art in the Park were all the children and their enthusiasm. A special section – just for kids – encouraged them to fill bottles with colorful layers of sand and other Kid’s Art Spot activities like the StoneLionPuppet Theater and the Artful Science Tent. Also available for kids – amazing face painting and a place for them to tie-dye their own tee shirts.
In a world that seems to think Fine Arts in school aren’t so necessary these days, all one needs to do is look at the faces of the children attending Art in the Park to realize just how important being creative is.
So, grab a kid and head to your nearest art festival, become inspired and support the artists who make such fabulous opportunities available.
